The number of Windows PC owners using VPNs has exploded in recent years, and for a good reason. But with so many VPNs on the market, it can be hard to know which VPN for PC to choose. In this video, I'll share my top VPN for Windows picks in 2023 and explain why I find them to be the most suited for PC users.
=== Security ===
Let me start with the obvious: we all keep important data on our PCs, so a VPN for PC must have good security and privacy standards.
NordVPN has baseline protection that we all need right here. Not only do you get your connection protected by the latest encryption algorithm, but any leaks from connection drops are also prevented by the Kill switch. You won’t have to worry about your IP being exposed if your internet connection suddenly breaks.
But maybe you need a little more oomph from your Windows VPN security, something exciting? Maybe Surfshark could help. When it comes to baseline security and privacy, it’s very similar to NordVPN, after all, the two companies joined forces not so long ago. The only difference is that Surfshark still doesn’t have an independent audit for their no-logs policy and it’s based in the Netherlands, a country belonging to a data sharing alliance, so privacy-seekers may find that a concern.
Another VPN with similar baseline security and privacy focus is Atlas VPN. This one is unfortunately based in the US, which can be a privacy issue, but there have been no issues with it so far and the no-logs policy is covering for that nicely. Atlas VPN stands out by itself since it’s a good free VPN for Windows 10 or 11, or to be fair, offers both a free and paid option.
=== Features ===
Besides the baseline security, these providers can offer some unique features other competitors cannot.
For instance, NordVPN stands out with the Threat protector feature. This is one of the best VPN ad and tracker-blocking features on PC right now. It can even detect malicious websites online, saving you the trouble of looking for the standalone software for the same purpose.
When it comes to Surfshark’s features, it’s hard to decide on the most useful feature. On one hand, I want to highlight Bypasser, a feature that ensures that only the apps I need are connected to a VPN. On the other hand, Surfshark Nexus is coming up and this feature sounds revolutionary. Not a single VPN allows you to connect to the entire VPN network and switch IPs without disconnecting. With Surfshark Nexus that will be a reality soon enough, and I’m looking forward to it.
Meanwhile, the premium version of Atlas VPN has a feature that comes really close to Surfshark Nexus - SafeSwap. Personally - I think it’s a neat thing for streaming since sometimes your IP gets blacklisted by streaming platforms. Instead of reconnecting, like any other VPN for PC will force you to, SafeSwap can just change your IP in a flash. Extra points because it is easy to enable that feature in the Atlas VPN Windows app.
=== Performance ===
Any VPN will slow down your PC’s internet connection, that much is a fact, however, a good VPN for PC will let you keep most of your speed and help you with ISP throttling.
NordVPN, for instance, can keep up to 90% of the original speed, this speed test is proof enough. Surfshark was almost as fast for me here, but it can go even faster sometimes, depending on the servers you use.
Atlas VPN is the slowest of the bunch. But I’ll give it credit, the speeds are consistent between the free VPN PC version and the premium one. To be completely honest, even if it’s slower, this speed will be more than enough for streaming and torrenting.
